Sustainable Swaps that Save You Money | How to live sustainably on a budget

Living sustainably can have a bad rep for being expensive. I can see where this myth comes from. A lot of sustainable swaps can have a higher upfront cost, like reusable cotton pads. However, it's important to distinguish between up front costs and cost per use. 🤔

Like with the cotton pads example, a packet of disposable ones might cost you £1.50 compared to a £10 for a pack of reusable ones, but the reusable ones last longer and can we reused so they actually end up costing you less in the long run as you're not constantly buying disposable options.

When you look at cost per use you realise that many eco-friendly products actually last longer so have a lower overall cost. Here are just two sustainable swaps that can actually save you money because they're reusable...

1) Shampoo Bar

Did you know, a shampoo bar can last 80-100 washes compared to just 25-30 for a plastic bottle?! 🤯 Although shampoo bars may seem costly in comparison to your favourite shampoo brand, because they last longer than a plastic bottle they actually work out cheaper. So not only are they great for the environment (no plastic bottle needed!) they're great for your wallet too.

My favourite shampoo bar is the Garnier Ultimate Blends which you can pick up at your local Boots or Superdrug. They're more costly than other brands I've tried, so look out for them being on offer! And if you're looking to support a small business, then I've also tried the shampoo bars from Soul Good Stuff. Their Bath, Bubble & Beyond shampoo bars are amazing, and at only £4.50 are much cheaper than Garnier. You can also get 10% off by clicking and shopping through this link.

2) Safety Razor

Honestly, a safety razor is probably the eco product that has saved me the most money over the years. I previously used a re-usable plastic handle and then bought disposable plastic heads to attach. These would cost me around £8 a packet for just 3 blades. Whereas now I can buy a pack of 5 blades for just £1.99! Although the up-front cost a safety razor can seem huge (I bought mine from Aphrodite Razors for £20), because the handle is made of metal it's a razor for life. The blades are also so much cheaper so the cost per use (I'm going to be saying this phrase a lot!😆) is less.

I'd 100% recommend switching to a safety razor if you haven't already. It's better for the planet with no plastic involved, it's cheaper, AND the shave is much better. What's not to love?!

I hope this blog has shows you that living sustainably doesn't have to be expensive. That when you make eco swaps that fit with your lifestyle, and are products you use weekly (if not daily), then you'll probably end up saving yourself money!
