With Christmas just over a month away (🥳) the season of giving is officially here! With that comes excessive consumption as brands try to encourage us to buy their products. And no day better represents that than Black Friday...
Did you know, Black Friday home deliveries create 429,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions—the equivalent of 435 return flights from London to New York, or the weight of 61,308 elephants! (Source: Forbes)
Being more conscious in your shopping decisions is one of the easiest ways you can reduce your impact on the planet, and Black Friday is just one of those days!
With the cost of living being so high this year, many of us will be using Black Friday as an opportunity to get our loved ones Christmas presents, but that doesn't mean you can't shop with the environment in mind.
Here are just three ways you can shop more sustainably this Black Friday weekend...
1) Set Clear Goals
Just like any other day of the year, make sure you're clear on what's a want and what's a need. With the frenzy of Black Friday and not wanting the miss out on deals before they sell out it can be hard to keep that in mind. Which is why writing a physical list a few days before can be so helpful. You can keep this in front of you when shopping on Black Friday to help keep yourself focused so you're not distracted by "amazing" deals and buying things unnecessarily just because they're cheap. You're also more likely to grab the best deals if you're clear on what items you're looking for beforehand and know exactly where to look!
2) Can I wear this 5 ways?
When it comes to reducing the impact of fashion on the planet, the most sustainable thing is re-wearing what you already have. During Black Friday it's easy to fall trap to wanting to buy cheap clothing and get a good deal. If something catches your eye, do a mental audit of your wardrobe. Is this something you can make 5 different outfits with using clothing you already own? Or is it going to be something you'll buy and then never wear again? Make sure you're buying clothe that complement your style and the pieces you already own. And definitely don't but it if you already have something similar in your wardrobe!
3) Can I find it second hand?
The main advantage of Black Friday is you can get things for less, but did you know you can do that all year around?! Shopping second hand is one of the best ways to save money, you can even find some items brand new! This Black Friday if you see something you like on sale make sure to double-check that you can't get it cheaper second hand. Have a look on sites such as Vinted, Ebay, Depop, Facebook Marketplace to help save money and the planet!
I hope these tips help you navigate the sales this Black Friday weekend in a way that's kind to your purse and the planet!
