Feeling overwhelmed on your eco-journey? You're not alone.
With 76% of adults in the UK alone admitting that they worry about climate change, it's no wonder that many of us are suffering from symptoms of eco-anxiety as we go about our daily life.
Part of being an eco-activist is staying up to date with what's going on around the world so that we can call attention to different issues - but the reality is, a lot of the news about the environment is negative, leaving us feeling disheartened and hopeless. As a result, this makes it difficult to balance being current and protecting our mental health, so knowing how to manage these emotions to stay motivated is really important.
What Can Be Done About It?
To help keep you positive and motivated on your eco-journey, I've decided to start a new series each week where I share 3 positive eco-news stories from around the world to serve as a reminder to you, me, and others that the work we're doing is important and is making a difference!
So, if you're looking for some good eco news for a change, you've come to the right place!
Happy Eco News From The Week - #2
1) Australia Tackles Textile Waste with 'Compostable Clothing' 👚
It's no secret that fast fashion is having a detrimental impact on our planet due to the amount of waste from clothes that's ending up in landfill. And with the average consumer now buying 62% more clothing than they did 15 years ago, it's an ever-growing problem that needs an immediate solution. This is where the Australian brand Very Good Bra decided to step in by creating bras and undergarments that can be composted, worm-farmed, or buried in the soil at the end of their life. Unlike other clothing made from synthetic fabrics that can't biodegrade, all garments from Very Good Bra are made from 100% botanically sourced materials - pretty amazing! Find out more here.
2) Nature Helps Clean Up Polluted Waterways 💦
One of the aspects I love about nature is not just its beauty and the positive impact it has on our health, but also its ability to independently safeguard our planet through remarkable means. And whilst many of us are familiar with the ways that polluted waterways have devastating effects on our aquatic ecosystems and general health, not many of us are aware of nature's very own water filter: the 'bivalve'. Clams, mussels, and other bivalves are excellent filter feeders that play a crucial role in improving water quality and can filter large volumes of water, removing suspended contaminants in the process. And now research shows that bivalves can be used as a natural tool in ecological restoration projects! Find out more here.
3) Norway Takes The Lead Towards A Future of Electric Vehicles 🚗
With 80% of new cars sold in Norway now being battery-powered, it seems like the future of electric vehicles has arrived already in Norway - and the positive results speak for themselves. The air is cleaner, the streets are quieter, and the country is now one step closer to reaching its climate goal for all new cars to be "zero emission" by 2025. One in 5 cars on Norwegian roads is now electric, and I can't wait for the rest of the world to follow in their footsteps! Find out more here.
