Whether you're looking to reduce your plastic waste or just looking for reusable alternatives, the kitchen is a great place to start making sustainable swaps. Here are just three of my favourite sustainable kitchen swaps...
1) Reusable Coffee Cup
Did you know, we throw away 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups in the UK every year?! 🤯These coffee cups have a plastic lining to stop the liquid from leaking meaning they're nearly impossible to recycle. And don't get me started on "compostable" cups - most of them can only be composted in industrial composting environments so won't be breaking down in your garden any time soon.
Switching to a reusable coffee cup is the best solution! Not only are you helping the planet, but you're helping your wallet too. Many coffee shops will now offer you a discount if you bring your own cup! I know how easy it can be to forget your coffee cup or not plan to get a takeaway drink and now you're without your reusable cup. My best advice is to invest in a collapsible cup that you can keep in your bag all the time so that you're never without ✅
2) Compostable Sponge
How many sponges do you reckon you've gone through in your lifetime, let alone this year? Well fun fact for you - the UK throws away 600 million sponges a year! 😢 But there is a more sustainable alternative! The plastic based sponges that we buy at the supermarket are made to fall apart to keep you coming back and buying more. By instead using a compostable sponge you can ensure that your sponges are disposed of properly and don't leak microplastics into the environment once they're thrown out.
My favourite compostable sponge is from Seep. Their sponges are double-sides with a luffa scourer, perfect for scrubbing up dirty pots and pans! 🧽 As the sponge inevitable gets dirty you can pop it in your dishwasher give it a new lease of life. And once your finished with your sponge, cut it up into pieces and place it in your home compost - simple as that! You can try Seep for yourself for 15% off with "ATG15", see their full range of household eco essentials here.
3) Dish Soap
As I shared in a recent TikTok video, I am obsessed with trying everything I can in soap bar form! 🧼 Something that I was apprehensive to try was a dish soap bar. I'd been using my Fairy washing up liquid for years now and it was serving me well, but the plastic waste that was causing is enormous. A dish soap bar is a plastic-free and sustainable alternative and once I finally tried it I actually realised it works perfectly fine. Just like a shampoo bar once you rub it, it lathers up perfectly. My dish soap bar works the same, if not better, than washing up liquid! ✨ This is a swap I'll 100% be keeping. I bought my dish soap bar from My Little Echo Shop where you can get £5 off your order by clicking here.
There are so many other eco-friendly kitchen swaps that I could share, I'm definitely going to have to do a part two!
