How to Travel Sustainably | Sustainable Travelling Tips

As an eco-influencer that loves to travel, I used to feel so guilty about travelling.

And whilst it's understandable to feel guilty about the impact of travel on the environment, the good news is that there are ways to travel sustainably and reduce our carbon footprint without having to confine ourselves to a life of no adventure!

As I've learned in my eco-journey, it's all about finding a balance between our desire to explore the world and our responsibility to care for it. So, with some conscious effort and planning, we can enjoy travel while also being mindful of our impact on the planet.

Ready to make your next adventure more sustainable? Here's how you can travel green too!

1) Choose Slow Travel Options

We loved using public transport when interrailing last summer!

I don't know about you, but from the minute I receive that confirmation email with my hotel booking, I can't wait to hop on the plane and soak up some gorgeous sun. The earlier I arrive, the better!

However, fast travel options like flying are typically the worst method of transport for our planet. And from learning this, I've now made more of an effort to choose slow travel options where possible and try to appreciate the beautiful scenery I get to take in on my journey instead. Taking the bus, train, or cycling is a great way to cut down on your carbon footprint. Plus, it's often cheaper than driving or flying and you get to sit back and enjoy the ride!

2) Don't Forget Your Reusables

My tote bag comes everywhere with me so I can skip asking for a bag when shopping!

While I've been busy getting ready for my trip to Croatia next week, I've been making an active effort to make my travelling more eco-friendly by packing my favourite sustainable items.

It's all too easy to pick up an extra water bottle at the airport made from single-use plastics, or a toothbrush because you forgot to pack one! But, as we all know, plastics like these are harmful to our environment and we should try to skip the single-use plastic when travelling and pack reusables instead (a reusable water bottle/coffee cup, tote bag instead of plastic bags, reusable cutlery and metal straws etc.).

3) Be a Responsible Traveller

We did a pasta making masterclass in Milan and it was the best!

Another easy way to make your travelling more sustainable is by simply being a more responsible traveller when you do venture abroad.

Always do your research beforehand on the country you're travelling to: you'll want to make sure you're not accidentally disrespecting the local environment or culture with the holiday activities you have planned. It's also a good idea to remember to clean up after yourself too if you visit any beaches: avoid littering and try not to leave anything behind.

Above all, have fun, stay respectful, and remember that by taking small steps to make your travelling more sustainable, you're making a difference!
