How to Follow a Vegan Diet I 3 Steps to Going Vegan in Veganuary 2023

Hello 2023! 🎉✨ All Things Green is back for another year of sharing tips on living an imperfect sustainable lifestyle. Everything from sustainable fashion, green cleaning, to eco-friendly diets... And what better time to discuss going vegan than in Veganuary?! This month we'll be sharing loads of great content on our Instagram page about getting involved in veganism, so make sure you're connected with us there!

What is Veganuary?

Veganuary is a global campaign that encourages people to give up animal products for the month of January. Every year the 31 day campaign provides resources, tips and inspiration to help people start a vegan lifestyle - with the hope that they'll continue supporting veganism beyond January! You can sign up here.

January is probably one of the easiest months to try and adopt a vegan diet, or at least reduce how many animal products you eat. Veganuary has become a huge campaign so many brands and food outlets push their vegan products (or release new ones!) making veganism more accessible and affordable. So how can you get involved?

How to follow a vegan diet?

Step One - Cut out the animal products you rarely/don't eat

We all have our likes and dislikes when it comes to food. Maybe you're not a big fan of cheese, or don't like the texture of ham? Make a list of those meat and dairy products that you don't like or rarely eat and cut those out of your diet first. Try and aim for a 50% cut in your meat and dairy intake. By starting with the items you won't miss you can build up your confidence with cooking vegan and choosing vegan alternatives. It can be overwhelming to go 100% vegan straight away so look at slowly phasing out your favourites over the month. By starting small you can create positive habits that are more likely to last!

Step Two - Try new vegan recipes and meals

Now that you have a list of meat/dairy products that you're cutting out, you can now look for new recipes that don't use these. Trying new recipes is a fun way to keep you motivated on your vegan journey! Check out vegan accounts on IG, ask friends/family or even look at the vegan menu at your fave restaurant for inspo.

Step Three - Collaborate

Take on the challenge with a friend to help

keep each other motivated and to have fun! Whether you go out for dinner, cook together or just need some moral support - taking on the challenge on with a friend will help you stay inspired. It's also a great way to hold each other accountable. It helps having someone in your corner who understands why you're making this lifestyle change and can encourage you when others may be negative.

I hope this three step guide has shown you how easy it can be to adopt a vegan diet! Whether you're looking to go full Veganuary mode and go 100% vegan or just want to try eating more sustainably by cooking more meat-free meals, these tips can help guide your journey.

Remember that living sustainably is always about what works best for you and your lifestyle. Don't try and follow things that make you uncomfortable or you feel forced into. If veganism isn't for you - that's okay! There's plenty of other areas of sustainability you can support. Real truth - I'm not vegan. But I make a conscious effort to cook more vegan dishes and only eat meat a few times a week. That's what works for me. Have fun experimenting and figuring out what works best for you! 💚
