Food Waste Action Week | How to reduce food waste

If food waste was a country it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in the world, responsible for 8-10% of GHG emissions.

Shocked?

By reducing your food waste, you can have a huge impact on the planet. In fact, if in the UK alone we stopped throwing away all the bread we do in a year it would be the equivalent of planting 5.3 million trees!

By tackling your food waste habits you can help contribute to a fairer and healthier future for the planet.

With it being Food Action Week, myself and @sustainably.soph have put together our top tips for reducing your food waste. Reducing our food waste footprint is something we can all do easily at home. Read on to find out more.

1) Ditch the Store Discounts

Store discounts promote overspending and overconsumption. They add to your food waste when you don't get around to eating the ‘buy one get one free’ item, or that yellow sticker item. Avoid falling into the marketing trap of these 'deals' and only buy what you actually need. If you struggle to ignore these deals, make sure you come to the store with a clear shopping list and don't stray from those items.

2) Make a Meal Plan

Without a meal plan you can't have a clear shopping list or know what needs to be eaten up in your cupboards and fridge. A meal plan helps you organise your meals for the week, or even the month. By planning out each meal (and the ingredients needed), it will help make sure you eat the food that needs to be eaten first and keep you tracking any leftovers too!

3) Dispose of Food Waste Correctly

Let's be real - sometimes food waste is inevitable or happens accidently. By by making sure you dispose of that waste correctly you can lessen your impact. Whether that be composting your potato peels or distributing your leftover food with apps like Olio. And make sure to utilise your freezer when products are nearing their expiry date.
