Hands up if you're guilty of always saying "I have nothing to wear" (when your wardrobe is quite literally packed to the brim)? 🙋🏻♀️
I know I definitely am!
Unfortunately, this mindset is what leads us to buy clothes unnecessarily as we're unable to remember what items we already own. And by doing so, we cause more damage to the planet by increasing our carbon footprint: according to the BBC, the fashion industry accounts for about 8-10% of global carbon emissions, whilst 85% of all textiles end up in the dump each year!
So, what can we do to minimise our impact?
On my quest to become more conscious about the clothing I own so that I can make better spending decisions that won't harm the planet, I recently found some hacks that changed the game for me when it comes to re-organising my wardrobe - and now I'm passing them on to you!
Here are 3 tips for better categorising your clothing and outfits so you're no longer questioning whether you have anything to wear (and buying more clothes you don't need as a result):
1) Separate Your Clothes Into 'Summer' and 'Winter'
One thing that's really helped me better organise my wardrobe is having both a winter and summer wardrobe to keep my seasonal pieces separate - and this doesn't necessarily mean having two wardrobes (not all of us have a walk-in closet!).
For example, when I was at uni during the winter, I mostly had all of my jumpers and thick cardigans with me as I knew I'd need something warm and be way more likely to wrap myself in a cosy jumper than throw on any t-shirts/dresses.
As for my summer tops, skirts, dresses etc., I kept them stored away in an ottoman back at home so that I wouldn't have them cluttering up my wardrobe and making it difficult for me to know what clothes I can and can't wear - which brings us nicely to my next tip...
2) Make Sure Your Clothes Are Actually Visible
Another tip to better organise your wardrobe is to make sure that your drawers are properly organised so that your clothes can be clearly seen. This way, you're not rummaging through them and making an absolute mess trying to figure out what you do and don't have!
One way I like to do this is by rolling up my clothes neatly into drawers and keeping the clothes that I wear/like the most at the front so I can access them much easier. Anything that is likely to crease or is a little too big to fit in a drawer, you can pop on a hanger and hang from a rail.
Marie Kondo actually has the perfect folding method to utilise space in your wardrobe for this exact reason - check it out here and let me know how you get on!
3) Plan Your Outfits With Your Phone
Let's be real, most mornings I have no idea what I'm going to wear for the day (especially with the weather being so changeable in the UK during Spring). However, after recently discovering the Whering app, my mornings spent running late for lectures because I'm frantically pulling clothes out of my wardrobe trying to find something to wear have gotten a LOT easier!
What I love about this app is that it allows you to digitally categorise your clothes to make building outfits even easier. I'm in no way affiliated with Whering and they haven't paid me to say this, but since using the app, I've been able to pull together some super cute outfits with my favourite pieces (and even some older pieces I'd completely forgotten about!).
This means I'm less tempted to buy new clothes as I can come up with so many pretty combinations with the clothes I already have - a win for the planet and a win for me!
Hopefully, these tips help you better organise your clothing so you're no longer left wondering what to wear and are able to give the clothes you already have (and as a result, our planet) a little more love!
